Carlsbad, CA-- GigaTrend Inc., the leading worldwide manufacturer and
integrator of Digital Audio Tape (DAT) storage devices for computers is
introducing Turbo SL, a 5 gigabyte, half-height, 5 1/4 inch series of DAT
drives. Turbo SL contains second generation data compression technology
that is 20% faster than other DAT drives using data compression. Available
in over 20 different versions, Turbo SL is fully NetWare 386 compatible.
Banyan support is also available.
The Turbo SL family of DAT drives, with backup speeds of NetWare exceeding
300 KBs/per second, also contain flash memory for easy firmware upgrades
performed in under 90 seconds at the user site. Turbo SL is also fully
backward compatible with existing GigaTrend SL tape drives as well as the
preceeding full height version using first generation compression methods.
Specifically, 4mm DAT tapes from the earlier models can be read and
restored on the new Turbo SL.
The Turbo SL family is comprised of two advanced solutions to the ServerDat
and LanDat 4mm product lines. Turbo ServerDat SL is a fileserver-based
backup of medium to large LANs. It is a "shared" device that resides at
the fileserver and permits all authorized users on the network to perform
backups and restores.
The Turbo ServerDat SL software, contains a graphical tree structure used
for easy selection of all data and remote workstation backup. Operating in
background mode, this server-based DAT drive maintains a complete backup
database library and offers the users the ability to access any file on a
5 gigabyte cassette in an average 20 seconds. There is also a windows
version available.
Turbo LanDat SL is a workstation-based DAT backup solution that backs up
network fileservers or large stand-alone PCs. Using a NetWare-like
interface, Turbo LanDat SL backs up all known fileservers on the network
in one unattended operation.
Along with flash memory, Turbo SL contains a unique gate array chip
configuration with ASICs circuitry to control Turbo SL's advanced computer
grade RDST logic. The drive family also contains one megabyte of buffer
memory, almost twice the memory capacity of other DAT devices. This
feature enhances the drive's backup and restore performance.
According to Randy Larsen, GigaTrend's director of product marketing,
"Historically, GigaTrend has been the leader in providing the highest
performing DAT drives in the LAN environment. Now, with our second
generation compression-based Turbo SL drives, we have achieved another DAT
technology "first."
The Turbo SL has the industry's highest level of error correction with only
one error in every 1,000,000 recorded cassettes. In addition to its
technical superiority, "One of the biggest advantages of the Turbo SL is
pricing," says Larsen. These drives price out very competitively in the
marketplace at less than a dollar per megabyte with a 5 GB drive. ' The
cost saving is considerably less than using multiple QIC mini-cartridge
drives," he adds.
The Turbo SL family including Turbo ServerDat SL and Turbo T and at SL has
begun shipping. PC/AT, MCA, and EISA versions are available in both
internal and external configurations. Server-based subsystems can be
configured as VAPs or NLMs. Prices range from $4150-$8150.

Carlsbad, CA--GigaTrend Inc., worldwide leading manufacturer and integrator
of 4mm DAT storage systems is introducing MasterDat NLM, a 5 gigabyte DAT
solution that performs network backups of all fileservers and workstations
on Novell 386 networks at speeds up to 50 megabytes per minute. MasterDat
is comprised of DAT backup hardware, permitting 20 second average file
access time (QFA), and GigaTrend's MasterSafe software.
MasterSafe, the software segment of the MasterDat LAN backup solution, is
comprised of several individual programs. It contains NLMs for each
server, DOS applications for each workstation (no matter what the network
or internet size), and at the heart of the system, is a unique program
that transforms a workstation into a high performance tape station.
MasterDat NLM serves as a highly cost effective backup solution for large
networks or internets with multiple fileservers because the hardware
investment is only at the primary tape station. As a result, all
fileservers (even remote fileservers) do not require a tape drive, just
the MasterSafe NLM software.
Together with the MasterDat 4mm hardware, the MasterSafe software enables
servers and/or workstations to perform backup operations in parallel while
the tapestation feeds the backup data to a single tape drive at
unprecendented throughput levels.
"With the MasterDat NLM method of re-organizing the way data is routed over
a network or an internet using distributed processing algorithms, the file
transfer rate from any node on the network, even over T1 lines is
dramatically increased. The result is the fastest and most efficient
backup utility for Novell networks," says Dan Masters, GigaTrend's
director of software R&D.
There are several key advantages to the MasterDat NLM concept of network
backup. The NLM module backs up using Novell's SMS, a new backup support
library which guarantees backup and restore support for OS/2, UNIX and Mac
files residing at the fileserver.
It also contains script operations that allow the user to design different
schemes such as full or incremental backups on an hourly, daily, weekly,
monthly etc. basis. Backups can be attended or unattended whether or not
individual workstations are logged in.
From a network security standpoint, MasterDat NLM has advantages, too.
Since it employs the concept of distributed network processing, the LAN
administrator can maintain centralized control of the backups while still
allowing backup procedure autonomy at the workstation. Other security
features include: password protection, NLM backup of server files, and
full NetWare security for the tape (or multiple tapes') database.
MasterDat NLM can be configured for ISA, EISA, or MCA architectures. When
the device is daisy-chained, (up to seven drives can be linked) all drives
are backing up simultaneously at full streaming speed.
Why is MasterDat NLM such revolutionary technology? According to Masters,
"Traditional shared backup applications permit only one network node to
function at a time for backups. However, MasterDat NLM permits multiple
network nodes and fileservers to be backed up simultaneously. This
parallel processing of back up tasks yields vastly higher performance that
exceeds all other backup methods."
Pricing for the MasterDat NLM, which includes 4mm DAT hardware and the
MasterSafe software starts at $6450 (MasterDat #436). Pricing for upgrades
to MasterSafe software for existing GigaTrend customers will be $1950.
(MasterSafe #470). MasterSafe software will be available as a standalone
package for $3950 and will include the software, controller card, and
cable (MasterSafe #472).

Carlsbad, CA-- GigaTrend Incorporated, leading worldwide manufacturer and
integrator of digital audio tape (DAT) storage systems for micro and
midrange computer environments, is shipping VersaDat for VINES, a DAT
storage system for Banyan VINES 386 version 4.0. VersaDat for VINES is a
high capacity backup and restore 4mm tape storage device enabling backup
of over two gigabytes of VINES data on a credit-card sized cassette.
VersaDat for VINES is compatible with any 386 or 486 server running VINES
386 4.0 such as the COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO or COMPAQ DESKPRO 386. By connecting
to the server and utilizing the VINES File Back utilities to backup and
restore the server, the VersaDat for VINES 4mm DAT system backs up all
important network services on the server, not just user programs and data
files such as those backed up from a workstation.
The 5 1/4 inch form factor drive utilizes a Reed Solomon encoding method
with an error rate of less than one error in every 10^15 bits. This
extremely low error rate is unmatched in the quarter inch or 8mm
environments. For added reliability, the VersaDat for VINES has a built-in
automatic head-cleaning device controlled by the firmware. Drive
diagnostics can be determined by the user from a full-featured user
control panel located on the front of the drive.
When connected to a server, the VersaDat for VINES backs up and restores
the entire server or portions of the server. This means the same 4mm DAT
cassette can back up and recover all the special VINES system services
such as:
. Street Talk
. Mail Services
. Server Services
. VINESFILES
. VANGUARD
. Print Services
. Other Services such as bridges
By backing up all the special VINES files, a user does not need to re-key
all the critical information required to get the system up and running if
a server crash occurs. According to Rick Schulman, GigaTrend's national
sales manager, "Our Banyan resellers perceive the VersaDat for VINES to be
a real asset to network administrators because VINES users can now take
advantage of leading edge DAT technology such as Quick File Access."
Since the VersaDat for VINES has the capacity to backup between 1.3 and 5
gigabytes of data with the TurboDat option, "VINES users now have a
midsize capacity DAT solution that fills the gap between the 150 megabyte
and 2.2 gigabyte tape backup solutions." says Schulman.
Compared with the backup speed of a 150 megabyte cartridge, the VersaDat
for VINES is dramatically faster. "And, you can install a one gigabyte
solution today and upgrade to 5 gigabytes in the future without having to
swap out tape drives," he adds. In tests on 386 servers, a 150 megabyte
cartridge averaged about 3.5 megabytes per minute and an 8mm drive
averaged only slightly faster. The VersaDat averaged close to 7 megabytes
per minute and up to 10 megabytes with the TurboDat option in benchmark
tests.
Pricing of the drive begins at $6450. For more information, contact
